Welcome to a series of Blog posts that detail my experience with the injectable HCG Diet Program. Please note that I am not a medical professional nor claim to offer professional health advice on this diet or any other weight loss regimen. This is my personal experience with what is a relatively new approach to weight loss that many have yet to try.

My HCG Diet Story – Week 1

Just like most of you, before I started this diet I did a lot of research. Fundamentally, I learned that HCG stands for Human Choriogonadotropin, the hormone produced by pregnant women in the early stages of pregnancy. I learned that recent medical studies proposes a small, daily hCG injection (approx. 125 IU to 200 IU) which typically results in a weight loss of 1 to 2 lbs per day, and often more, when accompanied by a very low calorie diet of approximately 500 calories. (Remember, pregnant woman produce 13,000,000 IU of HCG in a single day, 15,000 times less than taken for weight loss!)

HCG triggers the hypothalamus to mobilize stored fat in pregnant women which was essential to insure that human fetuses received the fuel needed in order to be healthy even in times of famine when food was scarce for mother. HCG affects the metabolic functions so that fat can be easily transferred to the blood stream from pools of stored fat from locked fat reserves.

By the way, for all the men wondering – hCG is not just for women.  HCG is a natural water-based hormone present in both men and women. Days 1 & 2: The Loading Phase:

This phase is the first two days when you start taking the hCG injections. During the first two days of starting the program, you need to eat as many high-calorie foods as possible to prepare your body to combat the effects of the low calorie diet in days ahead.

Do NOT skip this phase—I cannot stress this enough! I know you’re anxious to start losing weight but for optimal success LOAD up on as many fatty foods as possible during these first two days! If you’re like me and have done your research prior to starting this diet, you’ll have read a myriad of reasons for the necessity of this “loading” phase.

The best documented reason I’ve found so far to comply with this directive is to “relieve any preliminary pangs of hunger as well as severe headaches that you might experience when you lower your daily calorie intake to only about just 500 calories in the following days”.

Personally, after gorging for two days on “everything & anything” that was taboo to me in the past, I was so disgusted and sick to my stomach that I couldn’t wait to stop eating for 25 days! This was a huge mental boost for me to conquer the days ahead.

After the two loading days are done, the third day starts your 500 calorie diet using only the listed foods allowed in Dr. Simeons’ book “Pounds & Inches.” Here are the details:

Breakfast:Tea (preferably Green) or coffee in any quantity without sugar. Only one tablespoonful of milk allowed in 24 hours. Stevia may be used to sweeten.
Lunch:
  1. 100 grams of veal, beef, chicken breast, fresh white fish, lobster, crab, or shrimp. All visible fat must be carefully removed before cooking, and the meat must be weighed raw. It must be boiled or grilled without additional fat. Salmon, eel, tuna, herring, dried or pickled fish are not allowed. The chicken breast must be removed from the bird.
  2. One type of vegetable only to be chosen from the following: spinach, chard, chicory, beet-greens, green salad, tomatoes, celery, fennel, onions, red radishes, cucumbers, asparagus, cabbage.
  3. One breadstick (grissino) or one Melba toast.
  4. An apple, orange, or a handful of strawberries or one-half grapefruit.
Dinner:The same four choices as lunch (above.)

 

Don’t cry after reading the menu…remember this is only for the next 23 days! You can do it! Think about it, a mere 23 days of the above menu to change your metabolism forever! …No brainer. Personally, I made my 23 days easier by indulging in foods that were normally out of budget (such as filet minion & lobster) but ultimately saved more because I was not buying expensive processed foods.

Additionally, eating dis-allowed, processed foods on this protocol will usually lead to slow weight loss and stalls in your progress. Drinking coffee, or green tea and the required 2 liters of water daily is required. You continue each day dosing your hCG, eating the foods and weigh yourself daily upon waking up after using the restroom. You will start to see wonderful losses on that scale!

The first week was the hardest for me. Expect to feel slightly “spacey” from detoxing sugars and other toxins from your physiology. (An inside secret is to add Vitamin B injections which are immensely helpful during this phase as well as the rest of your diet.) They will give you energy, stamina, mood elevation as well as help with cravings. I don’t think I would have been as successful as I was on the diet without the Vitamin B Injections and even months after my program I’m still using them weekly.

The most profound experience I had during my first week of this diet was the revelation of the difference between “true” hunger and “psychological” hunger. Let me explain, I’m a “foodie” who expresses emotions and self-rewards through food. By the same token I’m a “Type A” personality so I can be very “boot campy” with what I put in my mouth.

Because I’m a “Calorie Drill Sargent” I can easily starve myself on ‘typical’ diets but whether you’re like me or not, when on the HCG diet all bets are off.  In fact, I’d almost wager that those who have no will power may be at an advantage. Stay with me here because I’m trying to get a point across, but I have to take you back to my story to get there…

For me, the first two loading days were worse than the diet itself! I felt self-loathing, disgust, fear that I would lose self-control and never stop eating, but in spite of all that I plowed on because I was determined to follow the regimen of the diet.

I was sick to my stomach after those two loading days, but immediately realized the wisdom of the diet…after those two days I couldn’t wait to stop eating! For the next two days the after the loading phase the diet was a piece of cake, but then the psychological issues came to play.

I swear neither my body nor my stomach were even remotely hungry on this diet. But my brain? That was another story entirely. My brain… just wanted to *CHEW*! It was bizarre but I then recognized that it wasn’t “true” hunger but instead was something inside my head.  So I looked deeper…

The first thing I recognized was my bad diet rituals. My husband and I had a ritual where we would eat our dinner then go back to our computers and answer emails and such, then finish our night by regrouping for a Discovery Channel or recorded show and munch on ‘__fill in the blank__’.  Really it doesn’t matter what we were munching on no matter how healthy it could be, carrots or ice cream (and I guarantee it wasn’t carrots), but at this time of night it doesn’t matter.

So how did I combat this? Well let’s go back to the “24 Day” thing… Yes, we had our rituals that we developed over time and needed for our own relationships health and well-being. We laughingly call ourselves the “vampire family” because we get up late and go to sleep late, but it was keeping those late hours that made it so hard to follow the diet! Once we realized that staying up into the wee hours of the night made it harder to follow the diet we started going to bed earlier to make our hCG diet commitment most effective and it worked for us!  

No matter what your schedule, you have to truly embrace the fact that it’s only a full three week commitment to reach the goals of your lifetime – that’s so doable!
